I hit a hard writer’s block recently. I was so bogged down with bills 💸 and the stress of daily living that I could not think about the passion I have to just write. To just put an idea on paper/screen (my laptop) and let it grow from a seed to a rant to a couple pages of information or a nostalgic thought.

SO, I asked my 3 year old niece to give me a topic, a thought. She said some extremely cute but unrecognizable words. I then sat and talked to her father, my brother and an interesting thought came to mind. WE DO NOT WANT FREEDOM. We really don’t, as Americans want to be free anymore. I’m definitely going to tell you why.

We tolerate corrupt political practice

We live in a country for the people and by the people. Meaning our government officials👨🏾‍💼⚖, law officers 👮🏼‍♂️, and state workers work for the people. They are tasked with making sure the county is ran smoothly. Somewhere in our history (probably from the start) politics went from “how can we become a better people and country 🤝” to “I have to wheel and deal so I can half do for the people 💵”. Politicians literally lie to our faces on a daily basis and we accept the lies. The ones who are really for the people don’t have the political connections or money to really get their thoughts to our ears. They then go back to their regular lives or are picked up by the big political parties.

The sad part about all this is that we, you, can say, “no more” and literally pull any judge, mayor, governor, senator, or president out of office with enough people. “But J, that would take a long time and a lot of work. I gotta feed my family👨‍👩‍👧‍👧”. Very true, but if this keeps up feeding them will be the least of your worries💀. If we don’t act then it will keep happening. Because we don’t act it will keep happening.

We are ok with Debt

I know, how many times am I going to talk about this. A lot (lol) maybe. Just hear me out. I was in service and my pastor said a very important and mind-blowing statement in her sermon ⛪. (I’m paraphrasing) God never said to be the borrower. He said you should be the lender. Our monetary system is built on borrowing, not earning. This is why it’s unbalanced and out of order. It goes against the will of God.

Now me being an adept thinker thought, even common sense should make us aware of how jacked up our system is. The government borrowed from other countries 🇨🇳🇯🇵🇦🇪🇬🇧🇮🇳, we, the people, borrow from the goverment and have to borrow government issued IOU’s (money) from them to pay them back. “Well J, that’s just how it is”. Wrong, ask yourself, what did we do before we had money? Take a minute to think about it

We bartered. We traded. You give me a service or something and I will give you a service or something else. We give service for a little more than a third of our life time and we are in debt the whole time. But again we, want this for your life. Why? Because it’s all we know.

You want security over freedom

I remember when Marvel Civil War came out. People chose sides. About 5 to 8 years prior to the movie the comic came out with the same choice. Captain America’s side (freedom and autonomy for super folk). Iron Man’s side (government registration for superfolk). I can write a whole piece on this alone. To keep it simple it basically boils down to Freedom (Cap) or Security (Iron Man). The movie and comic ended with security being the choice. The registration act was passed and it made all super people who operated as “heroes 🦸‍♂️🦸‍♀️” government workers (and property). It all fell apart and those who chose freedom were brought back in to save the day. As I said before, art imitates life (read my last blog).

We choose security everyday. Freedom is hard because it makes us have to deal with our issues of poverty, crime, and injustice. It’s easier to lock up🔒 “criminals” than it is to actually reform them and make them workers who give back to society (even though we put more money into an inmate than we do a child in school). Your probably thinking, “Well we can’t just let them roam around stealing and killing. What about the children?” Ok, you have a point. But what about the countries who have a 70-80% reform rate with their inmates? If we are one of the greatest countries on the planet why is our incarceration rate higher 📈(especially in colored folk) than our reform rate?

This is another topic I could write a lot about, but to sum it up. You want security over freedom cause you rather feel safe than free and if you don’t see an issue in that than I am really scared for you.

Me, I want both! (well maybe just a little more freedom 😉)

You don’t know any other way

Remember when you were a kid and you thought nothing can get better than you favorite cartoon. Then you got the toy. And you thought, oh it can’t get better than this? Then they made a movie. WHAT! Oh, it can’t get better than this? Then, oh boy, they went and made a video game of your show. Mind blown.

We accept our lot in life because we don’t know any other way. We dont know or believe that it can get better. Growing up my family only vacationed up and down the east coast. It was not until I went to Chicago, Vegas, Colorado, and Tennessee,  that I was able to see some big differences, in my own country. Like how dry vegas was and it really came to life after about 7 ish. How Tennessee had a lot of accents. Growing up it was hard to imagine or even get a glimpse (outside a book) of anywhere or anything outside the area around my home. My point is there are always more possibilities.

Today we can go to various Map 🗺 apps and look at a street view or picture of almost anywhere in the world. Unfortunately that’s all some of us need. Going to a new place, thats scary and the unknown has always scared us. So we settle for the security of the lies we know than the possible truths that could be. We accept what is given to us instead of fighting for more. We welcome ignorance over the fear of the possibility of a better unknown. The question is, are we even ready to stand and change it?
